About Quilt Calculator

Quilt Calculator is a free, independent site with math tools for quilters. It works out backing, binding, batting and border yardage, and it sizes a quilt to a bed. A small team of quilters and web developers runs it.

Our method

Each tool uses a plain formula that is shown on its page. Binding follows the Utah State University Extension method. Quilt sizes follow the bed measuring steps from the American Quilter's Society. Mattress sizes come from the Better Sleep Council and the Sleep Foundation. Batting pack sizes, shrinkage and quilting distance come from the makers.

Every answer rounds fabric up to the next 1/8 yard, so you do not come up short. All math runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to us.

Testing

Before each release, automated tests check the formulas. They confirm the Utah State binding example of 7 strips for a 56 by 70 inch quilt, check that pieced backing panels cover the full width after seams, and check border and batting results against worked examples.

Limits

Fabric widths, shrinkage and longarm needs vary. Measure your fabric after you trim the selvages, and ask your longarm quilter how much extra backing they want.
